[PP-F1] Of Ostriches and Kangaroos

Recommended Posts

The plains of F1 were a place where Toothpick could truly be comfortable, and it could be said that he knew them inside out. If given a map he would be able to point out where the spawn zones, mob locations, agro range relative to mob location, mat farming spots, and other little oddities were with stellar accuracy. Even as a level one, he was able avoid detection from mobs completely if so wanted, provided other players didn’t drag a random mob out into the safe path and leave it there, something which pranksters did with surprising frequency. Toothpick could recall many times when he’d seen a Mat farmer die over something as simple as a “prank”; his stance on the hobby wasn’t a tolerant one. Fortunately for him, on  that day, there was no trouble to be seen, and he progressed towards his destination with ease.

The destination in question was a collection of trees some ways within the plains, known for the sweet berry that grew on their branches during F1’s eternal spring. Toothpick had heard that they made for excellent bait and felt obligated to test out that theory. He, however, wasn’t the only one interested in said berries, a community of ostriches using the dense patch as their main food source, thus making the berries a luxury. Toothpick, however, was not one to let some long-necked birds one-up him, and after a tad of study, knew exactly how to go about looting without inciting their rage. All he needed to do was avoid their nests, alas, they blended into the swaying tall grass with ease, and required a skilled eye to seer out the discrepancies; something which he possessed.

Seeing the trees far before he arrived on-site, Toothpick caught out the form of a player among the ostriches, the fellow doing “God knows what”, in Toothpick’s opinion, as he didn’t seem interested in the trees. Waving a distant hello towards the player, not wanting to startle the Ostriches with a shout, Toothpick trecked his way over to him, keeping an eye out for wayward nests.

"Ready for round two, jerk-birds?!" The answer was pretty obvious as just seconds later three nearby members of the ostrich herd took it upon themselves to rush over from feeding in some nearby bushes to surround the boy. It had only been a few days since Seul's last adventure into the fields where he duked it out with that notoriously tough ostrich. Alas, his efforts yielded no eggs and an insignificant amount of col that left a bad taste in his mouth. Feeling bitter about the whole ordeal, he decided to leave town in the early morning to lie in wait until the creatures returned to their homes later in the day. Once some members of the herd appeared he sprang into action.

Seeing as how the birds outnumbered him three to one, his first choice was to execute an AoE move to sweep them up quickly. "Round Accel!" He called while swinging his dagger in a circular pattern. The small tempests of air the sword art produced followed soon after and shot off in the multiple directions, one for each ostrich. The birds of course weren't going down that easily, as every single one managed to avoid the attack and charged at the boy from different angles. To an inexperienced player it might've seen like an unfavorable situation and it probably would've been if Seul hadn't specifically been training so much to handle fights like these. The kicks that sprang from each ostrich lacked their usual high velocity and he managed to bob and weave his way out of their paths. Only to have them return to circling around like hungry sharks.

He raised his dagger once again before realizing something was off about the area. Somehow another player had shown up and was approaching at an alarming rate. "Hey, don't get too close! One well-aimed kick could be dangerous; let me keep aggro on these things." It wasn't like he was trying to be rude by not returning the wave. In his defense he was a little preoccupied. If he wanted to talk, taking out the birds would need to come first and he knew for certain his skill would be able to if he could just land a darn hit!

“Jerk-bird” was one among many of the odd names Toothpick had heard players title mobs, and just as he had, and would, with the others, it was soon to be forgotten. Regardless, “Jerk-bird’s” uniqueness made it a gem in the sea of cringe-inducing, senseless, and plain out horrible names. In the eyes of Toothpick, “Jerk-bird” was a feat of linguistic genius, as it turned an otherwise common and dull word into one with a catchy ring to it; Toothpick believed he simply couldn’t forget it. Toothpick would’ve marveled at the so-called word were it not for the immediacy of attention the situation demand, as an ostrich had already began to eye him uncomfortably, it’s nest not too far away from Toothpick’s boot.

Fortunately, Toothpick noticed the potential threat far before he agroed it, and snapped back into action shortly thereafter, heading off towards the cluster of trees. While it wasn’t obvious in any sense of the term, even to some of the more trained eyes, the boy had pulled the ostriches in such a way that it was advantageous to Toothpick. Not only were the trees easier to access, but Toothpick soon realized that he could peruse through more trees with impunity thanks to the Ostriches who would normally be watching over them finding themselves occupied.

The gust of wind sired by the gleaming blade of Seul’s knife dispelled any sense of concern for the player’s well-being as it blew over Toothpick’s person. The boy was clearly far better off than himself, and Toothpick was certain the fellow could manage himself without Toothpick’s aid. Still, the concern the boy showed for Toothpick made him want to help out, regardless of how foolish the idea was. Nearing the cluster of trees, and in a somewhat unpopulated patch of grass off to the side of the melee, Toothpick replied, “Don’t worry friend! I know what I’m doing, got a few months of Mat farming, and a full bestiary page on these creatures under my belt! You won’t see getting kicked any time soon! Stay safe yourself!”

Stay safe? Easier said than done. Although they didn't hard, one could probably imagine how annoying it could be to get kicked in the face not once, but three times. Seul took a stab at the first bird to run his way but just as he lashed out with h is dagger the monster side stepped and launched a blow to his face with its powerful leg. The attack sent the boy rolling back through the dirt only to be hunted down by a second ostrich which provided its own kick before running away. The third bird must have been the worst though as it seemed to be reenacting how the dinosaurs went extinct. Somehow it was barreling in from the sky and at a horrifying speed too, landing feet first on the boy's exposed gut and just standing there while he gasped for air under its immense weight. "You've gotta be kidding me...!" He murmured while looking around for the other player. It wasn't like he was expecting help. Quite the opposite really. He wanted to make sure no one interfered when he finally managed to separate these birds souls from their bodies!

“You do you!” offering one last glance to what must’ve been an embarrassing experience, Toothpick returned to the situation at hand, having finally arrived at his destination. An ostrich pecked at one of the many trees, munching away at the spherical red with a care for the world, and thus, Toothpick. He wouldn’t have had it any other way, and gave the bird a wave, even if it didn’t notice. He picked a tree on the outskirts of the cluster, figuring it best to work his way inwards as to better weave a path through the agro zones, and to give himself a better, albeit closer, view of the fight. Before Toothpick could move to actually pick a berry, the Ostriches’ dastardly combo attack sent Seul barreling nearby, drawing a raised brow on Toothpick’s part, “You sure you don’t need help? These “Jerk-birds” seem more skilled than their name would entail.” He pulled at a berry whilst looking down to the unfortunate, 13 of its compatriots vanished with it.

"Don't interfere unless you want to be next!" The bird that had been using him as a door mat had returned to its small flock; the three of them starring at  Seul with what he assumed was amusement over his inability to land a clean strike as of yet. The boy could feel seething anger rise to his face as he rose to his feet and could practically visualize the smoke coming from his ears. With a swift flick of his wrist he opened his menu and entered the inventory screen before materializing a different dagger, one that had a lack of wear and tear and possessed a lustrous blade that reflected the sunlight in a tantalizing display for the eyes. He adopted the stance for his AoE move once more and carefully launched the twirling winds toward the ostriches. His determination proved to be too great for the mighty birds as they all died upon impact, bursting into a colorful pixelated rainstorm shortly afterward.

With the threats gone he used his weapon to take a few practice stabs at the air before sighing and thanking whatever force that allowed him to finish up so quickly. "Feels good to kill three birds with one stone."  He said to no one in particular before turning his attention toward the other player who he had almost forgotten was there. "You're collecting ostrich food?"

“They don’t seem that intimidating to be honest, but their stats tell another story….” Toothpick mused to himself, watching as the Ostrich scittered off, wondering why it trotted back to it’s friends, rather than push the advantage. Figuring it was merely the the “easy AI” of certain F1 mobs, he returned to a thoughtless spectation, Seul’s fight was beginning to prove rather interesting. Seeing the once failure so successfully pull off a sword art, it filled Toothpick with a determination, a hope for his own attempts to master a weapon, he knew he could pull through. With the fight over, however, he had other things to focus on, turning back to the tree only to find it was completely devoid of berries, the ostrich from before now at his tree. While he watched Seul, it had eaten away at the berries, and with the same rules of resource depletion applying to mobs, had emptied it’s branches, only to leave for greener pastures. “Well damn.” He muttered, then Seul’s voice, he looked back to it, “Yeah, it’s not just ostrich food though, this stuff works pretty well as fish bait, according to the grapevine. As a soon to-be fisherman, that piques my interest…..Speaking of interest, what exactly are you doing here? These guys drop almost nothing save for the occasional mat, and they’re so out-of the way too.” He returned the stare of an ostrich that was glaring at him over Seul’s back, the bird quickly averting it gaze due to boredom, “There’s got to be better ways to spend your time.”

After hearing Toothpick's own reason for exploring the area and weighing it against his own, the task did seem like a wild ostrich goose chase. Maybe he was just wasting his time but even so being shown up by a few birds, especially those from the first floor, wasn't something he could just let go of so easily. He had grown stronger since his last encounter with the monsters and figured it'd serve as a pretty large boost to his ego knowing that he could singlehandedly cause their extinction. The very thought filled him with determination. "I tried gathering some of their eggs once, figuring I could sell them off to a chef in the market ....But I was the one who ended up getting scrambled." One of his arms had risen to scratch the back of his neck but whatever he had been feeling was quickly replaced by unease as the very ground itself shook beneath their feet. "I-I think now would be a good time to hide!" He exclaimed without wasting any time with charging into the nearby bush. The ostriches in the area were in an uproar and were fleeing in multiple directions and the sounds of the trees falling in the distance grew louder as whoever, or whatever, it was that was wreaking this havoc made its way toward the pair.

“Haha, a blood grudge is it? No wonder, any other explanation wouldn’tve made any sense,” Ostriches of all things  Toothpick cracked his neck, leaning his back against the tree. Trees rustled and the ground trembled in emotionless anticipation for Toothpick did not. He watched as Seul scrambled for a bush before turning to the fruitless tree he was leaned against, his expression motionless. A grip on one of the low-hanging branches, and he heaved himself up, another, and into perch on a branch; already he could see them coming. “A bush is a horrible place to hide, so immobile, and you can barely see anything.” The rising dust cloud caught his attention, the inflation appealing, “The ostriches don't bother with humans, and so as long as you don’t get too close to the eggs or their food, you should be fine.Black feathers rushed by, some halting by the trees, only interested in the fruit, or their children. Toothpick patted one of the thicker branches firmly, dangling his feet before the empty space before him, ostriches ignoring his tree due to it’s lack of fruit, only strutting past to reach some other distant destination. “You see, perfectly fine,” he looked down into the bush, somewhat surprised that there was no sign of Seul whatsoever.

Though he couldn't be seen the boy reflexively brought a finger to hips lips to make a 'shhhh' noise but to his surprise the other player had vanished as well. Before he could learn Toothpick's exact whereabouts the pair was met with the sight of a final tree falling as a monster made its way into the scene. Sure it might have resembled a kangaroo but the creature was far too large to be considered normal. It looked to be around twenty feet tall and seemed to be the cause of all the distraught, fleeing animals. The name "Kangzilla" was visible above the beast's head, as was the health bar that curved around its body. At first he was simply baffled that the developers would place such a powerful looking monster in the middle of the first floor, but soon supposed it wouldn't have been too much of a  problem for groups of low levels to band to band together and fight. Still, if it wasn't for the other player he might have tried to press a preemptive attack. He at least wanted some form of consent before drawing the thing's attention as it didn't seem to notice either of them yet.

Tremulous earth picked off from where it paused, the Ostriches gone as quickly as they came, and the cause of concern finally revealing itself. What the…. An almost cartoonish beast, “Kangzilla”, certainly not a creature Toothpick expected to see on F1. “Kangzilla” hopped in the closest thing to a leisurely gait that a kangaroo could have, seemingly more interested in the ground it tred than anything else, constantly staring off into the sand, or some shriveled greenery. It slowed to a halt as it neared Toothpick’s tree, sniffing at the air, before bending over to paw at an exposed nest. A blur of wind blasted Toothpick in the face as it’s motions stirred all underneath,  dirt and brown, dead berries kicked up as it wormed each egg from the nest and into its snout with a ginger dexterity. Toothpick could’ve easily have pet it without even stretching, beating flesh close enough for the scent of sweat to radiate onto Toothpick’s person. Slowly, his hand fell to the whip on his holster, unclasping each string pluck by pluck. Finished with it’s treat, the beast made to rise up once again and continue on it’s path, but was interrupted by a sneeze on it’s part, jolting it’s head towards Toothpick’s tree, eyes squeezed shut. When they opened, Toothpick was the first thing they saw. Almost immediately, he lashed out, the rustle of metal to signal an attack, a flash of light to sting a straight snout, a metal chain to leave a mark, and the beast stumbled back onto its rear.

It would be his luck to get caught up in such a situation. The other player had lashed out with his weapon and effectively stunned the creature but the damage caused was minimal. Would they even have a chance of outrunning something like this? Kangzilla was an agile one but it couldn't be in two places at the same time. Seul probably could have left., it was true that he wasn't the one who had engaged the monster but the idea of leaving behind someone to potentially die didn't sit well with him either. He made sure to curse fate in a low voice as he drew his dagger and crept through the foliage to the creature's rear. The tiny blade raised he  lunged at the monster's back but Kangzilla had recovered from its ill status effect by now and effectively turned on its heels before hopping over the boy's body to the opposite side of the clearing in a single jump. Upon landing the beast's head had craned around, allowing the red eyes to make their way to the one who had struck it and lock before releasing a snort in what Seul could only assume was pure rage. He turned his attention to Toothpick who had still been perched in the tree above before offering up an idle shrug. "I think we're in over our heads... Get it? Cause it jumped over my head before-"

(OOC: I'll let you play Kangzilla then since you counted the stun. xD)

The chain’s tip kissed the ground, dangling as his grip on both handle and branch tightened. The monster was an agile one, and judging from how his strongest attack didn’t scratch it at all, a relatively bulky one, but Toothpick didn’t falter. Don’t get hit The beast leaped through the air and Toothpick kicked off from his perch, a ripple waving through the chain as dust kicked up and boots were met with trampled earth, and egg shell was crushed, ooze having long since evaporated. “Even so, a grounded approach will do us best, play a defensive game and we should be fine,” a wink to mark the pun and his eyes met with redder. The earth shook, and the beast hopped, Toothpick backing off to the shade of the tree as to reduce the beast’s options. It cared not, and when it neared, hands rose up into the air as one last, uneven hop was made, propelling it forward more than usual as two feet lay infront of it. A dropkick? Regardless, Toothpick dashed out of the way, and the beast crashed into his tree. The which dust barely obscuring it’s form was cut through by thin metal as Toothpick cracked his wrist, the dethroned tree groaned, “Quick! Now’s your chance!”

Now was a brilliant time to land a hit on the beast, but to his dismay Cardinal was doinig everything in its power to keep Seul out of this fight. The boy had allowed his dagger to take on the glow of a sword art, the Fad Edge attack which was his most powerful skill. His form sprang forward and in succession lashed out from different angles with the move. None of them landed. Somehow. Kangzilla had managed to jump and maneuver its way out of each attack. The worst part of it all was that the beast was simply ignoring Seul altogether. The red eyes remained fixated on Toothpick who had been dealing the majority of the damage up to this point. What could he do other than shrug at his own inability to hit the monster and give his fellow player a double thumbs up while mouthing the words 'Good Luck' from across the field.

Deciding it unwise to get mixed up in a flurry of colorful slashes and hops, Toothpick backed off for a moment to appreciate the absurdity of the battle, but the illusion of a retreat was not one the beast would take to kindly. In one great leap, the beast glided it’s way over Seul, landing not too far away from the shattered husk of Toothpick’s tree. Toothpick registered Seul’s gesture for but a moment, nodding briefly before letting the chain loose upon the Kangaroo. A tiny paw rose up to catch the glistening chain, and Toothpick blinked in disbelief before being yanked off the ground. The beast cracked it’s arm back and made to twirl Toothpick about. Fortunately, the small chain slipped out of it’s grip far before even the first rotation had been completed, and Toothpick was sent tumbling into an uprooted trunk, kicking up dust into Seul’s face. The beast snorted as it turned to face the two, and Toothpick pushed himself off the ground with a groan, his chain without a blemish and sprawled out before the dirtied wielder. Only one? How?

Seul's jaw nearly dropped as the monster managed to not only stop the attack in its tracks but also fling Toothpick away like a yo-yo on a string. Though he wouldn't say so aloud, it had been a pretty amusing sight. At least until he landed anyway. The boy brushed away the caked up layer of dust now clinging to his figure but before he could actively voice some complaints Kangzilla had been upon the pair once again. The beast was out for blood, but not his. Though Toothpick didn't seem to have sustained any major damage, letting the fight drag on might prove to be dangerous in the long run. Seul intercepted Kangzilla's charge with his own dagger raised before activating his sword art for a second try. "Fad Edge!" There was no escape for it this time! A fatal miscalculation left the beast wide open for the attack which struck it across the pouch in four hastily delivered stabs. On the verge of death, it hopped backwards using what little strength it had to place some distance between them. "Yeah! Serves you right for ignoring me!"

He took a moment to regain himself, cracking his neck in slow rotations and swearing to himself that it was impossible for him not to feel anything from that I groaned He saw the smile on Seul’s face and while he grimaced at it he knew he would’ve done the same. The beast approached and he clutched his whip at the ready, uninterested in the dirt which caked him. In a moment of clarity he didn’t even raise the whip to meet the beast, it was the dirt and the dirt was the stage. A trail of light was followed by one which was red and curled about the belly and the beast hopped back could a prop feel?  He chuckled and stepped forward as his ally cheered like a gamer “I’ll stun it and then you go in, I’m feeling lucky now, and I’d rather it not run away” he tilted his head back to Seul for but a moment as his pace quickened, but not to the degree where beast would be startled. There was no reason for which he assumed his next hit would paralyze a stage but he approached none the less and rose his whip up to swipe. The beast was still recovering from the fear of what semblance of sentience it had, but it was ready for him. The chain rustled and the beast’s hand rose up to grab at the chain and it did but the gleam of the sun flashed off the chain and into it’s red eyes along any other present to see [censored] It rose it’s hands up to block out the light and stumbled back until tripped and fell, pulling Toothpick with it, dragging him along the dirt once again, Toothpick unwilling to part with his weapon. Fortunately, it’s grip loosened before the whip was pulled away and the chain fell limp as the beast fell on its back and its tail shoved it to it’s side. “There we go,” A guttural growl of the predecessors and he smiled Hook, Line, and Paralyzed
