SP - F5 The Sands of Teeth <<Blood in the Sand>> (Field Boss Run Part 3) (Completed)

Recommended Posts

A flash of bright light could be seen at the teleportation circle of Armadillo on the fifth floor. Materializing from it was a blue-haired player clothed in a light blue fur-lined jacket with a white shirt underneath. Covering his legs was a pair of dark gray pants tucked into brown boots, with a deep-sea blue sword attached to the back of his hip in a sheath.

"Ever since Teayre and Oikawa took off during Avalanche I got distracted. Guess I should probably pick up where we all left off, although it looks like I'm going to have to do this alone."

Giving a small sigh Calrex swiped on his inventory as his entire body was encapsulated in light. Switching out his gear he donned the Grand Chariot: Legacy, the unenhanced version of Oikawa's Grand Chariot, which he had forged from one of the new blacksmiths in operation. "This thing fits just like the old one did. Teion did a nice job on it."

As the full-body armor covered his body Calrex closed his eyes as his head also became covered in light before being replaced by the stoic expression of his helmet, the only indicator of a face being the two light blue slits marking the location of his eyes. Looking down at his arms he clenched and released his hands before heading out into the field zone.

"Let's get this done..."

As Calrex exited out of the settlement and into the field zones of the fifth floor he looked up, "Come on out Roc. Let's see how fast we can get this done."

In response to his command his blue peregrine falcon familiar materialized in a flash of light, giving a small screech before he descended to a height about two people above the Ultramarine Knight. Calrex gave a small smirk at the sight of his partner, although this was not betrayed by the emotionless expression of his armor, "It's certainly been a while since I wore something that didn't conceal my face. I wonder if some people would think of this as some kind of regression in my social personality, or that I'm closing myself off again. I guess in some ways they would be both right and wrong."

Continuing his trek into the area where the field boss spawned he activated his <<Reveal>> skill, looking as his eyebrows furrowed.

"...there's more movement underneath the sands than before."

The transparent landscape revealed to him that these movements were in fact not the working of one creature. More than a few <<Sand Shark>>s had spawned and were swimming underneath the waves of gold. "Most likely a response to my high level. Alright then, looks like I might have more work cut out for me than I thought."

Reaching back Calrex detached the sheath from the back of his hip, bringing both blade and scabbard in front of him. Grasping the Grand Blade with his right hand he released the hilt lock before fully extracting the blade, tossing the scabbard aside as it vanished into a series of tiny crystals.

Right as the Grand Blade's sheath vanished the sharks inhabiting the sands seemed to react as four of them swarmed upwards, aiming to [censored] up Calrex from below, not unlike how the original <<Sand Shark>> attacked him the first time he undertook the quest with Oikawa and Teayre. However, this time he was better prepared.

Seeing that the four creatures were coming from below Calrex crouched low before leaping upwards, at about the same time as the sharks broke the surface of the sand. Rising upwards he hit the apex of his jump first as he looked down to face them. Readying his sword he activated <<Lightning Fall>>, descending down inbetween the four of them as his blue lightning aura charged blade passed by. Since they were in the air instead of on the ground, the attack triggered a different animation.

Instead of piercing the ground and dispersing the charge, the lightning seemed to jump off the blade like a web, electrocuting each of the sharks as Calrex passed by. Each lingered in the air before dissipating into shards, some of the crystals remaining falling down onto the desert like rain.

Straightening himself Calrex looked forward, "Four down...how many am I going to have to go through to reach the field boss..."

It didn't take long before another wave of sand sharks to leapt from the waves of gold to try and attack Calrex once again. This time they attempted to leap at him from a lower angle, similar to how <<Sand Shark>> did when he managed to land a critical blow. As the bluenette's eyes scanned the sands with his <<Reveal>> skill he saw that the field boss had appeared and was charging forward with the next group that was preparing to engage him. Readying his sword he gave a calming breath before preparing for them to get into close range.

As the sharks did so he leapt up once again, unleashing <<Lightning Fall>> in its normal state. Plunging the Grand Blade into the ground the lightning energy shot out through the ground, skipping over the surface in arcs before striking each of the four creatures, eliminating three while leaving the field boss in the yellow zone of its health.

Almost immediately after the creature promptly burrowed deeper into the sands, going far enough below to leave the range of the <<Reveal>> skill. Calrex cursed under his breath as he gave a small sigh, "Great...that means I've got to find it again."

It didn't take long for Calrex to locate the <<Sand Shark>>. Hiding from the Ultramarine Knight was difficult, as any sense of cover could easily be negated by his Extra Skill <<Reveal>>. Although it was a limited range of see-through vision, the monster's AI was not aware of this as the field boss moved higher than its out of range elevation underneath the sands, coming right back into the bluenette's vision.

Quickly using <<Sprint>> he rushed forward, seeing that three other lesser sharks had joined in the boss' formation, ascending closer and closer to the surface of the waves of gold. Leaping upwards he activated <<Lightning Fall>> one last time, descending towards the sand's surface once again. Piercing the ground with the Grand Blade the electricity shot out and went underneath the surface, managing to shock all four of the creatures.

Confirming each of eliminated Calrex gave a small sigh as he looked to confirm that the quest was completed, "I guess this really was only a challenge back when all of us were first starting out. Now it's not any more difficult than a simple gathering excursion."

(2 Posts Until Full Energy Recharge, 1 Energy Recovered)

Upon the defeat of the <<Sand Shark>> Calrex decided to give himself a breather, sitting down in the middle of the many dunes that populated the field zones of the fifth floor. Since he was still wearing the Grand Chariot: Legacy, to some level there was no need for him to worry, as the <<Heavy Armor>> skill alone provided more than a decent amount of damage mitigation for him to rest, "All that's happened, and yet I still find myself doing almost the exact same thing I've done since I first started adventuring. Heh, it's almost laughable."

"At the least, I hope that I've at least grown as a person during my time here. It seems like this game has kind of forced a personality change in everyone due to the simulated close proximity we have to each other. In the real world, it's easy to cut off ties and isolate oneself. Here that is not so easy, as the friends list comes with a tracker, and removing everyone from your list can provoke some kind of worry in those you decided to forge relationships with. That forces interaction, and at times clashes of personality."

He gave a small sigh as he watched his Energy bar flash for a second, indicating that the out of combat recovery rate had kicked in. With two more flashes he would be back to full strength and ready to make the trip back towards the settlement.

(1 Post Remaining Until Full Energy Recover, 1 Recovered)

As yet another flash passed by Calrex gave a small sigh as he leaned back, looking up at the desert sky. Compared to the golden yellow sands of the desert landscape, it seemed almost out of place for such a blue hued picture to be painted across the heavens. Of course, he was aware that the view always changed with each floor they unlocked, "Heh, like Azide said, one of the things that's different from the real world is that we no longer share the same sky. Each floor generates a different appearance, with the true sky over Aincrad I'm guessing to be once we clear this game."

Giving a small sigh he reminded himself of the discussion he and the former guildmaster of Square One had on the upper floors, "Estimated to be seven years huh? Certainly too long of a time to be trapped in the game. By that time it's likely we'll all be forgotten about, possibly even left to die in the real world. Life support, to my knowledge, isn't given that much time for a change in behavior. For all I know we'll just become a forgotten part of history, or even a launching platform for some anti-virtual reality movement."

Sitting back up he dismissed the depressing thoughts from his mind, "That's why we need to keep moving forward. There will be a point where the strength we have right now won't be enough to keep up our clearing pace, but that doesn't mean to stop."

(Energy Fully Recovered)

Seeing that his energy had fully replenished in another instant Calrex got to his feet as he gave a deep exhale, looking up to see that Roc was still hovering overhead, "I guess we haven't been out for very long at all, have we?"

Shaking his head he picked up the Grand Blade from the sand's surface as he looked around, "I guess I might as well start making my way back towards Armadillo. No use sticking around out here if there's nothing that will pose a challenge. At this point all I'm doing is wasting time."

Giving a small sigh he looked towards the settlement, beginning to make his way back, "It's too bad there aren't any more challenging quests at the moment. I think right now the only two that might pose a challenge if I attempted them solo are the Butcher of the Sands and Lord of the Seas quests. If I work with another player it almost becomes unfair to the monsters, heh. I guess it just goes to show much strong I have become, unbeknownst to my skewed sense of progression."

A small smirk came across his face, "Maybe Teayre was right. I am strong enough. But to me, I will always need to improve. The only way I can prove effective in the floor raids to come is to keep pushing ahead as hard as I can, while still keeping myself alive. Guess that's a tough requirement to meet: Push as hard as you can until you feel like you want to die, but don't die."

"Ok...I thought Armadillo was this way..."

As Calrex continued his trek supposedly back towards the settlement, after some distance he stopped. Even with Roc's assistance, it seemed that no mater how far they moved, there was no sign of the village, "That's odd. I thought that the Sand Shark territory wasn't very far from the settlement. Have I been walking in the wrong direction?"

Turning around his eyes scanned the area, the <<Reveal>> skill activating so that he could attempt to see through the landscape, "So that's what happened..."

"All of the movement of the sharks beneath the sands, it changed the appearance of the dunes. Whatever areas I had used as location markers don't look the same anymore. Heh, I guess somehow I went and got myself lost."

Giving a small sigh he looked around the area, swiping on his menu, "Yeah...I've gotten myself way of track. I really should have used the location marker from the beginning. Guess I must be slipping today. Alright, better get going back to..."

Before he could complete his sentence Calrex heard a loud rumbling behind him. Turning his head so that he could see whatever it could be to the rear in his peripheral vision. The noise appeared to be coming from what looked to be a long trail of rampaging sand. Something extremely large was coming at him, and fast.

As the large mass leapt out from the sand Calrex's eyes underneath the Grand Chariot: Legacy's emotionless helmet widened for a second. The creature that had emerged from the sand in front of him was another sand shark, but it was even larger, almost three times the size of the field boss, "Why in the world isn't this one the boss?!"

Even though he didn't have to move to dodge the attack, the <<Greater Sand Shark>> reentered the depths of the sand right next to him, the missed attack still causing Calrex to hesitate for a second before he snapped out of his surprise, looking around to find the creature as it turned back around. Gritting his teeth he rushed forward, activating his <<Nova Ascension>> Sword Art. Letting the assisted system take over he flew forward with a light blue blade, slashing rapidly at the monster while it tried to emerge from the sands. His combo ended with a slam into the oversized shark's dorsal fin, seeing the Stun effect appear on the creature's health bar.

In response to the effect's activation the shark surfaced and fully emerged onto the surface of the dunes, immobile. Giving a calming breath the armored player readied for his next attack.

Activating his most powerful Sword Art <<Meteor Break>>, Calrex rushed forward as the Grand Blade became coated in the shining golden glow. For a few seconds it almost seemed like he was wielding a blade made of the metal as he unleashed a charge, slamming into the sand shark and forcing it to expose its belly. Immediately following the opening attack he unleashed a series of eight slashes, each one cutting across the creature's underbelly before he struck with another tackle. Finishing the attack he did a quickly spin as he brought his whole body around in a spinning fall slash, cutting vertically down until his sword's front edge met the ground.

The attack complete the oversized creature's Stun wore off as it promptly disappeared into the sands. Activating his <<Reveal>> skill once again Calrex kept an eye on the monster as it swam around under the sands, "This one's not trying to escape. Most likely because it's much large, it probably assumes it can take me out. Sorry to disappoint, but I have no intention of dying here today."

Looking below Calrex saw that the shark had suddenly sped up as it moved further and further away. However, before it got out of range of his <<Reveal>> skill the creature made an almost unrealistically fast 180 and turned back towards him, quickly rising to the surface as it leapt out of the sand, its mouth agape as it aimed to [censored] Calrex up in its jaws. The amazing speed the creature had gained from its movements beneath the sand made it too quick for Calrex to avoid.

Crossing his arms Calrex prepared for the blow as he felt the rows of teeth bite against the Grand Chariot: Legacy, the armor holding fast due to his <<Heavy Armor>> skill. For a second he expected the Thorns enhancement to trigger when he remembered at this piece of equipment was the lighter version, lacking the ability. Pushing outwards he broke free of the creature's jaws, activating <<Meteor Break>> once again.

Slamming into the creature's head he began to push forward while executing the eight slashes, pushing the shark further and further back. After elbowing the monster one more time he leapt upwards and slashed downwards once again, pushing the shark against the ground hard enough to actually cause it to bounce before flopping on its side. Almost immediately after the creature recovered and disappeared beneath the sands again.

The shark attempted to attack once again as it rose up from right beneath Calrex, aiming to not only bite him, but catch most of his person in its huge mouth, as if it was trying to swallow him whole. Unfortunately the Ultramarine Knight saw the attack coming from below as he dropped his body low before rolling out of the way. The column of sand-colored flesh emerged behind him as he quickly spun around, activating <<Meteor Break>> once again as he slammed into the creature's exposed underbelly.

The opening tackle had enough force behind it to break the momentum of the shark as it began tilting horizontally before it crashed into the sand due to its mass now being dispersed over the surface of the ground. Following the creature's exposed state Calrex continued his assault as he slashed again, and again, and again, completing the eight strikes before he twisted his body, activating another tackle which was spearheaded by his elbow, causing the shark to roll partially. Finishing his combo once again he leapt up and brought his blade down on the creature, cutting deep into the monster's flesh before it disappeared beneath the waves of sand once again.

"Alright...this thing's almost down. Just got to keep at it..."

Dodging yet another blow Calrex released another barrage of slashed and tackles from his <<Meteor Break>> skill, slashing and slamming the sand shark as he saw its health drop to just shy of empty. Giving a small sigh of relief he looked up to see that his energy was almost completely depleted once again. Cursing under his breath he took up a defensive stance as he stepped back a few paces.

"Guess I got overzealous and aimed to try and wipe this thing out too fast. Even with the high energy levels I have I'm still not powerful enough to break through something with that strong of a mitigation level."

Seeing the creature's dorsal fin move over and under the surface of the sands he gave a calming breath as he kept his eyes on the oversized sand swimmer, his eyes brows furrowing as he persisted his <<Reveal>> skill, "Come on...just got to last long enough to recover enough stamina to use Howling Octave..."

Seeing the next attack from the shark coming Calrex quickly flicked the Grand Blade into a reverse grip as he dive rolled out of the way, hearing the creature's roar as it smashed into the sand where he was standing, wiggling a few times to get itself back underneath the sands. Since the bluenette had gone on the defensive, the AI for the monster seemed aimed at wearing him down with the intent of killing him before he had a chance to recover enough energy.

Calrex gave a calming breath as he kept his <<Reveal>> skill active, making sure to keep his eyes locked on the oversized monster that was swimming around underneath the sands, "Geezes, this is just as annoying as when I had to fight that lesser sea wyvern when I was grandmastering my sword skill. Unfortunately, this time around I don't have a green tea energy drink to recover my stamina."

As the shark leapt up from the sands again it caught Calrex in a tough position as his foot slid out slightly, rendering him unable to dodge, "Tch, shoot..."

Flicking the Grand Blade into a hammer grip he activated his <<Parry>> skill, his forearms becoming lit up with a faint transparent blue aura. As the assisted system took over it guided his arms upwards, moving his sword into a straight vertical guard as the shark's jaws closed in on him. The blade's position acted as a pry bar, keeping the shark's mouth open before he shoved it to the side, dispersing most of the damage from the attack. The rest of absorbed by his armor as Calrex gave a smirk, "Heh...guess this thing really is nothing to be worried about..."

Turning to face the shark Calrex gave a calming breath as he returned back to his defensive stance, ready for the next attack. Since he was able to trigger the <<Riposte>> effect of his <<Parry>> skill the familiar stun effect had reappeared next to the shark's health bar, keeping it immobile once again.

As the shark's Stun state vanished once again it dove back underneath the sands as Calrex gave a calming exhale, keeping his eyes on the creature with his <<Reveal>> skill, scanning the depths. Watching the shark in such a skill almost made it seem like a developer's or glitched view of the game. To one of possibly a more creative mind it would be as if they had a "god's" view of the world. But of course this was not the case.

It seemed the shark was beginning to get wise to Calrex's attacks as it dove further down below, as if aiming to get out of the range of his vision skill. However while the Ultramarine Knight was keeping his eyes trained on the creature, his focus at the moment was regaining enough energy for a finishing blow.

"Come on...just a little bit more..."

It didn't take long for the sand shark to try and take advantage of its new strategy as it dove deep enough to move out of the range of Calrex's <<Reveal>> skill, the blue-haired player seeing the creature's tail vanish against a wall of sand. Cursing under his breath he kept an eye out as he scanned the area below.

Unfortunately the shark had managed to attack from a blind spot in Calrex's field of view, appearing from behind as it bit into his shoulder armor, pulling him along. Before the creature dove under the sands again he managed to break himself free, rolling to the side as the massive creature dove under the sands once again. It was just in time as well, as the additional impact of his arm being forced into the ground would have added on potentially more damage to the initial strike

Looking at his energy bar Calrex saw that his energy bar was only two points away from having enough to meet <<Howling Octave>>'s minimum to activate.

"Just one mo...gh!"

As Calrex saw the oversized shark vanish out of his vision once again suddenly it immediately returned, moving at an incredibly fast speed. Readying a defensive stance he refused to activate his <<Parry>> skill this time, deciding it would be better to sustain the blow and regain energy.

Feeling the creature's jaws sandwich him from both sides he gritted his teeth, seeing red numbers fly by, signifying the attack was a critical hit as the shark tossed him airbone. Righting himself so that he was facing the ground Calrex used <<Acrobatics>> to help catch himself, landing with both feet on the ground.

Looking up at his health gauge he saw that his energy was almost changed up enough. Turning to face where the shark was moving he gave a calming breath as he began to shift into the stance needed to activate his Sword Art.

"Let's finish this..."

As his energy reached eight points the Grand Blade lit alight with a flaming orange aura, indicating that his <<Howling Octave>> Sword Art was ready. Immediately unleashing it he flew forward, guided by the assisted system. He did sustain a hit from the shark as it managed to slam into him, since the advance put him out of range of its jaws.

Executing his attack he let out a flurry of slashes and stabs, each one seeming to almost release a small burst of fire-like energy with each strike until he slashed down, then up, then down with a finishing blow, splitting the oversized shark in half. As it burst into crystals Calrex gave a  sigh of relief, looking at his energy and health bars.

His health had almost gone into the yellow zone, while his energy was completely depleted. Shaking his head he gave a small smirk, as if to laugh at himself for a second before he looked around, "Looks like that was the last of them."
