Ebony had spent a good deal of time brainstorming as to what the best profession would be. She had already ruled out alchemist, that was a dumb choice of a job. She didn't want any profession that only gave temporary buffs. She wanted to make awesome equipment. She had narrowed it down between Tailor and Artisan, and it only took her a few more moments of thought to make her decision. The answer was obviously Artisan. Who would pass up the opportunity to make powerful enhanced jewelry? Why would she make coats for people when she could be making bracelets, earrings, and necklaces?

Now it was only a matter of finding an NPC who was also an artisan who was up for training her. That shouldn't be too hard, right?

...

"Stop saying um and get out of my shop!" Ebony heard as a foot hit her in the back, sending her flying out of the NPCs shop and onto the cold hard pavement outside. This was going to be harder than she'd thought. Even when talking to NPCs she got flustered and the most she could get out was an "Ummm." After a couple of minutes of Ummm's, they would kick her out onto the street. It was going to be a long day.

She would go to a PCs shop and try to get training there, but her reasoning was that if she was already this shy around the NPCs, she was bound to be even worse around the PCs. She had to keep trying. She entered another NPC's artisan shop, and walked up to the counter. She opened her mouth, and the familiar "Ummm..."'s started to come out. An NPC walked out from the back, carrying a box with two golden earrings in them. He shocked her right out of her shyness. It wasn't the earrings that cured her, but the ginger hair on his head. It wasn't some cheap dye job, it was the epitome of ginger. She imagined that when the sun was shining it would look like his hair was on fire.

It wasn't much, but it was enough to knock her stuttering right out of her. "Can I help you with something?" The ginger NPC asked, setting the earrings down in the display case that made up his counter. He smiled at her, and she blushed a bit. Sometimes the NPCs were so lifelike, it was actually a bit creepy. "I need someone to teach me the artisan profession." She explained. She was so busy staring at the NPCs hair that she forgot to stutter at all.

The ginger shopkeeper nodded and leaned forward on the counter before whispering in a conspiratorial manner. "This is the first time ive been asked that, but in order to teach you, you need to go out an collect a material or two." He explained, and she noticed a quest pop up in her HUD. It was called <<Earning A Living>>. That must be it then. She just had to collect a material and come back to the shop with it. It couldn't be all that hard, could it?

Ebony nodded her thanks to the man. "Thank you. Ill be back in a little while." She called out as she exited the store, the door swinging shut behind her. She quickly marked the shops location on her map and set out for the eastern exit to the city. She would wander around the fields for a while and maybe attempt to kill a boar or two. If that seemed too dangerous she would find a mine or just pick up random rocks in hope that they would work as materials. She hoped to only be gone for at most an hour. She wanted this quest done with today!

She exited the city, her dagger in hand. She remembered what had happened the last time she had fought a boar at her level. That was obviously not the way to go. It would probably get her killed. The smart thing to do would be to try to gather materials from the ground, or to find a mine to gather ore in. She had no plans to die, not for another seven or eight decades. She started to search the ground using her eyes, looking for anything that looked remotely usable.

She got down on her knees next to a fairly large bush, and started to chop at that bushes roots. Nothing. As soon as she got a root up it burst into those familiar crystals. She stood up and continued to walk away from the starter city and further into the fields. She had a mission. She had to find a material before that gingers shop closed, or she would never be able to become an artisan. Not that she really wanted to. She just wanted to wear cool jewelry without having to pay for it.

Ebony noticed a small group of boars in the distance, so she turned around and went in the opposite direction. She didn't plan on getting killed any time soon. When she was a good enough distance away, she got down on her hands and knees and started to sift through the dirt, looking for a piece of metal or a plant that might count as a material. She had only been searching for a few minutes and she was already starting to get annoyed.

She didn't understand why the game had to make it so hard to find mats. She scowled and stood up to move to a new location. Her mood was progressively getting worse, and this fruitless search wasn't doing anything to help. Maybe she would attempt to kill a boar and hope she didn't die. At least she would know for sure that if she succeeded she would get a material for certain. With her luck she would probably barely survive and somehow not even get a material though.

Ebony started to walk back towards the city, in hopes that she would find something she could use. It was getting late, and the NPCs shop would probably be closing soon. She didn't know what would happen if she didn't return before then. Maybe nothing would happen, and shed be able to return the next day, or maybe it was a timed quest and she would never be able to take it again if she didn't complete it now.

Ebony wasn't entirely sure why she was heading back to the starting city. She hadn't found her mat yet. She thought about it for a few moments, coming to the conclusion that if she found a material near the entrance, she wouldn't have so far of a trip back. In fact, she could just enter the city and go to the NPCs shop straight away instead of having to make some long trek through the field after finding a material a couple hundred miles away.

Ebony approached the gates to the starting city. She hadn't found a mat yet, so she had a big frown on her face. As she walked, her foot caught on a rock, sending her flying face first onto the ground. Her head smacked onto a rock, splitting it in half. She crawled onto her knees, looking down at the rock she had split. There was some sort of silvery metal in it! She picked it up, and it deposited itself in her inventory as a material. She got back onto her feet and walked into the city towards the shop.

Ebony smiled as she entered the city and headed towards the gingers shop. She was proud of the material she had found, even though she had found it by accident. It was still a material though, regardless of how she got it. She made her way through the twisting streets of the starting city until she finally reached the shop she was looking for. She pushed the door open, and the bell above the door rang.

Ebony smiled as the NPC came to the counter from the workshop again. She opened her inventory, and after a few swipes and taps, she deposited the metal on the counter. "Easy. Couldn't you have asked me to do something harder?" She asked smirking at him. He picked up the material and tossed it up and down in his hand, feeling the weight. "Well, a quests a quest. I don't make them up. And this is some nice metal here." He commented, continuing to toss the material up and down.

She grinned at the compliment. Well, he wasn't really complimenting her, just the material. He motioned with his hand for her to follow him, and made his way into the back where the workshop was. It was filled with all sorts of tools, for all sorts of things. Their was a furnace in the back, which she presumed was for melting down metals. Their were tiny chisels and pliers, all the stuff that was needed to make beautiful jewelry.

The NPC set the material she had given him down on his work table and pulled out one of his own. He grabbed his material with a pair of tongs and moved it into the fire of the furnace. "Watch closely." He called out, slowly turning the tongs and heating up the piece of metal until it was like butter. He quickly pulled it out of the fire and started to twist it around with a pair of pliers, forming it into a simple silver pendant.

Ebony watched as he dunked the pendant in water, cooling the metal down to room temperature with a loud hiss. "Now you try." The ginger instructed, handing her the tongs and her material. She grasped the material with the tongs and put it in the flames, turning it slowly for a few minutes until it was glowing yellow. She took the material out of the fire and set to work. She was determined to make something even better than the NPC had. When she was done she dunked it in the water before pulling the intricate silver cross out and putting it on a chain. It had no enhancements, but it was still beautiful.

The NPC gave her a friendly pat on the back. "Great job. Most people fail on their first try. If you can pull that off, I don't have anything else to teach you. You can figure the rest out yourself. Now go find a shop and make some col!" He exclaimed, giving her a light push towards the exit to the workroom. Ebony was slightly shocked. She had thought that there would be a lot more to the whole artisan thing. Apparently she was a natural. Now she only needed to find a shop to get started. She had a few ideas about what floor she wanted it to be located on.
