Performer Song Mechanism

Can Performer songs be played both from a recording crystal and a musical instrument? Or only from a recording crystal? The reason I ask this is because after getting my profession, I'd like to be able to play songs much like a Bard from typical RPGs.

They are played with a recording crystal only. Mostly because switching to your instrument and playing it in the heat of combat is rather clunky as one can guess, plus recording crystals are your 'crafts', which is playing into a crystal to throw out later.
