Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) Manta leaned up against the outer wall of the Starting City, just thinking. In this game, choosing the right skills was extremely important. Once you chose your build, you couldn't waver from due to the fact that skill resets didn't exist, or at least hadn't been discovered yet. After her last quest with Ebony, Manta had enough skill points to upgrade her rapier to the max level. The only question was whether or not she wanted to. She remembered back when she had met Sousuke and Pyro and the rest of the old gang. Like all of the new players they had been hunting boars, and that was when she used the rapier for the first time. Rapier certainly wasn't the most powerful weapon, but when she had consulted the guide book her eyes had been drawn to the skill tree, down to that beautiful thirteen combo hit. The rest of her time and skills in the game after that had been her working towards getting that combo. Now she was wavering though. Did she really want it that badly? Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #2 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) The sun was just starting to rise, sending golden rays up and out, turning the white clouds a golden orange color. She really had come a long way since that first fight. There had been others of course, many others. She had done some solo, and some with friends. She remembered all of the quests she had taken with Koumori and the more recent ones with Ebony. Sousuke had kind of dropped off the map again recently, but she wasn't too upset about that. She understood that he needed his space. She wanted to go back further though, back before her bout with depression and the solitude that had resulted from that. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) There had been a quest with Destiny and another player who's name she couldn't quite recall. That was The Search For Hoya or something like that. They had given up about halfway through as they kept getting lost. They hadn't even come across the Minotaurs. Back then she had only had rank one in the rapier, but she was still pretty powerful. Her memories from back then were pretty hazy, but there was one day in specific that was clear, and stood out like a gold coin in a pile of silver and bronze ones. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) She remembered <<Long Live the Queen>> like it was yesterday. She was talking about the first time that she had taken the quest, not the more recent one she had taken with Ebony. She and Sousuke had gone and done the quest, and Manta had to say, that was one of the most romantic dates she had ever had. Which was kind of funny as it was a quest and not technically a date. Still, she and Sousuke had had a moment, and shared their innermost thought and feelings with each other. It had been a great day, but it hadn't been long before he had decided to abandon everyone and go to help clear the floors. Edited November 16, 2015 by Manta Gaul
Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) She stood up straight, standing next to the wall instead of leaning on it before unsheathing her rapier. It was called Loves Oath, and represented the love that she had for Sousuke. The white, ivory blade glinted in the sunlight of the rising sun, the extravagant cross guard (if it could even be called that) seemed to suck in the light in comparison with the swords blade. She had designed it after Sousuke's own sword, Bloods Oath, inverting the colors that his sword had and using those colors for her's. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) Manta started to walk away from the starting city and into the fields. She knew of a certain cave a good distance away from there that spawned higher level monsters that would be better for her to fight. Manta ran across a sing boar as she was walking and smiled a bit, still remembering those times. She sliced her rapier a single time in the air before sprinting forwards and beheading the weak mob. This was much easier than it had been all that time ago. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) Manta couldn't believe the troubles she had used to have with these creatures, the long material hunts and the almost deadly battles she had had with them when she was only a few levels along. Now she could dispatch them with a single blow, no problem. It was actually kind of sad, and not just because it reminded her of all of the friends that she had either lost contact with or had lost in battle. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) She remembered with a smile her old favorite sword skill, streak. She had gotten plenty of materials back then using it, as it was an AOE attack, and all of the boars could be taken out with one shot at that time. She walked up on a herd of boars and activated it, her rapier glowing red as she sent a powerful slash across the mobs, killing them all with one hit. They didn't qualify for loot sadly, but she wasn't there for loot. She was making an important decision. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #9 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) So far, according to her calculations, she had spent thirty five skill points on this skill. The average skill cost five points. She certainly didn't regret her decisions up to now, but at that moment she had sixteen skill points saved up. You could do a lot with fifteen skill points. You could get two ranks of a skill, such a light armor, or you could get a skill such as Athletics which upped your damage and health. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #10 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) It wasn't a hard decision to make, but she wanted to make absolutely certain that she wouldn't regret her decision. A thirteen hit combo would put her <<Shooting Star>> and <<Penetrate>> skills to shame, doing almost twice the damage. Would she be better off investing in mitigation skills though? In the future her evasion might not be enough and she could get one shotted by an overpowered boss. Edited November 16, 2015 by Manta Gaul
Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #11 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) She snorted. A boss couldn't one shot her if she one shotted it first. She continued on into the field, reach the entrance to the cave after a while of walking. It didn't look like much, but the tunnel continued down for a good bit and had a lot of underground passages and the like. She stepped into the cave and started to walk. She would likely come across a mob soon, so she held her rapier at the ready. If there was one good thing about this cave, the walls had glowing moss on them that provided plenty of light, although the greenish tint of it made the place a bit creepier. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #12 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) She remembered when she had first upgraded her sword skills from rank one to rank two. She had been really proud of Quadruple Pain and still was. It was just one of those skills that never stopped being useful with it's stun effect. A skeleton walked out of one of the side caverns in front of her, and she activated it, stabbing at the skeletons limbs once each. It didn't even have time to be stunned before it burst into pixels. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #13 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) She had already passed many, many side caverns without being attacked by a mob, and she was starting to wonder what was going on. Without the frequent interruptions of the mobs, she reached the end of the cave system quickly, entering into the final cavern. There was a loud thud as a gigantic skeleton dropped down from the ceiling in front of her, looking to be some sort of field boss. She prepared herself for the upcoming fight, raising her rapier and preparing to charge. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #14 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) Manta stepped into the cavern, slowly circling the giant skeleton. She wasn't about to use her charge skill on this boss, as she didn't know anything about its attack patterns or damage dealing. She also needed some of her energy to restore itself before she could attack it. It swung a fist at her, and she jumped to the side, dodging the attack easily. This didn't look to be a hard fight, but she would take it seriously regardless. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #15 Share Posted November 16, 2015 Manta grinned at the skeleton and charged, activating <<Linear>>, the first skill she'd ever used. It was a simple attack, but that was what made is appealing. Her first boar had been killed using this attack. She rolled past the skeletons punch, and got back up, her blade glowing red and sending a single stab into the skeletons shin before running back to safety. It was a reliable skill. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #16 Share Posted November 16, 2015 Sure, <<Linear>> was a reliable sword skill, but it didn't pack the sort of punch that she would need for this fight. Time to move on from rank one skills to rank two. Reliable and relatively strong. She moved back in, her sword glowing a blue color this time. She leaped into the air and thrust her sword into the boss three times, dealing a moderately good amount of damage. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #17 Share Posted November 16, 2015 Sure, Accel Stub did a good bit of damage, but it still wasn't enough. Of course, the next in her skill progression belonged to the rank three sword skills. She hd upgraded these much more recently, during the quests and training that she had done with her friend Koumori. She remembered using them against the giant ice elemental, <<Avalanche>>, just a month or so back. She ducked underneath another punch from the skeleton, preparing to show it how strong the next tier of sword skills got. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #18 Share Posted November 16, 2015 Manta held her sword out to the side, parallel to the ground. The skeleton had drawn it's arm back to attack her again, but she wasn't going to dodge this time. The giant fist flew towards her, but she was confident that she had the health needed to survive it. As it got closer, she activated <<Crucifixion>>, sending six stabs into the Skeleton's hand, just as it smashed her up against the wall, leaving glowing red marks all over her body. Still, it hadn't done much damage, and she had done a lot more damage to it than it had done to her. The last tier she had access too was tier four... She would end the fight on those. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #19 Share Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) Manta sprinted forwards, vaulting up and kicking off of the Skeletons leg to reach it's head. She drew her sword back and activated <<Penetration>>, sending four extremely powerful stabs forwards and dealing a great deal of damage to the boss. She couldn't imagine how much damage she would do with tier five. She landed safely and rolled to disperse the force of the fall before retreating a bit to regenerate a bit of energy before her final attack. Amira 0 Posted November 16, 2015 Author #20 Share Posted November 16, 2015 Manta dived to the side, letting the skeletons fist slam into the wall behind where she had just been this fight was already over, she just needed to get one hit in. She was strong enough to take this boss down on her own with no trouble, but what if she were fighting a stronger boss, with a party of people. Every last bit of damage helped in situations like those, and a couple of points of damage could be the difference between someone living and someone dying.
